The "Castle"

Welcome to our new site….New: We added a Library > http://Library.Luggala.org

It is 2010 and while Luggala represents the more traditional way, it is 2010.We were here in 1870 too: The world moves at an almost a mind-numbing speed. The Internet now dominates, as a way of communicating with the world. It is “ with ” because we are all part of the community. Luggala is a resource and we are proud to offer it as such. We are situated in the Wicklow Mountains.

A quote:

“It’s easy to love humanity when you’re this far away from it.”
- Actor Daniel Day Lewis quoted while looking down from the mountains of Luggala, County Wicklow in The New York Times

the lake can be quite noisy but any sudden movement tends to send them bounding off. They are shy creatures. (Notice to Guests: Please drive carefully when you are entering The Estate as the deer do roam freely over the 25 sq kilometre grounds, they do not distinguish between what is ” theirs ” and what is ” ours “).

We hope you like Trees. We have some old ones. They are magnificent and perhaps remind us of a more natural time in our history. They are like sentinels, keepers of the land , offering a connection twixt earth and sky.

Luggala Lodge was built in 1787 and extended in 1805 by the La Touche family, Dublin bankers of Huguenot origin.

In 1937 Ernest Guinness bought Luggala and gave it as a wedding present to his daughter, Oonagh, on her marriage to Lord Oranmore and Browne. It famously became the gathering place for Dublin’s intelligentsia as well as artists and musicians from around the world. Luggala passed to their son, Dr The Hon Garech Browne, who continued this tradition.
